I want to build a bigbox, but I'm having trouble knowing what I need to buy. I can't seem to find a kit containing all/most of the parts. That has left me with sourcing parts. I have access to a laser cutter so I don't need to buy a frame. I have a lovely genuine v6 hotend already with a decent extruder, an octopi, and a ramps and arduino board. (I am looking to get a 32 bit solution eventually) Its confusing to know what to order to finish the part list. Is this a good start? American distributors? bigbox fixing kit £120.00 bigbox motion kit £90.00 bigbox nut trap £20.00 Where do i find that sweet sweet heated bed? This seems to be it? https://www.filastruder.com/collect...sories/products/e3d-varipower-heated-bed-pack How about that powersupply? 24 or 12 volts? The specs seems to call for 400 watts http://e3d-online.com/Electrical/12v-PSU Finally, What am I missing?
Refer to the build manual | http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/BigBox_Build_Manual Bill of Materials | http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/Bill_Of_Materials It's a 24v System. We are working on getting heated beds back into stock, there are complications..... Don't use ramps! I suggest the DuetWifi Board with the 7" LCD add-on. You will need to make a few adjustments to get it to fit though but definitely worth the effort and time to install from the beginning | https://www.duet3d.com/ There is a thread about the Duet here| https://forum.e3d-online.com/index.php?threads/bigbox-duetwifi-controller.1766/
Thanks for that link. But it isn't terribly clear for all the parts. For example, what is the leadscrew specs? Here is a decent BOM that I compiled.
8mm leadscrews, the KS BB had 2mm pitch with more recent versions using 8mm pitch. I bought these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3D-Printe...r-LOTS-/381564559682?var=&hash=item58d7052142 Sub-miniature microswitches fit the holes on the various carriages - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261765312...49&var=561000841571&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT What else do you need to know about?
Hi What length are the z axis leadscrews, I can't find that info in the manual and the Ebay sale has several length options? thanks Keith
if you go with cheap ebay rods, make sure the threads on the rods are identical. I bought a batch of four last year and 3 were identical but the fourth was noticeably different (about a mm off after 300 m. Using mismatched rods can cause crabbing and jamming that is very hard to diagnose because you can't easily check the pitch precisely once the rods are installed.
@Greg - Thanks Greg, now I know the exact length I can source them rather than get make do's from Ebay. Do you have them in stock at E3D? I don't see them on the site so i'm guessing not but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also, a little mouse has whispered that you may get the Bigbox heated bed back in stock this next week or two, would that be right ? I was going to make my own but if you're restocking ...... @Ephemeris - Thanks for the advice, I'll either get them from E3D, if they've got them or I'll buy them from a reliable source like Zapp or such, there are many good suppliers these days. Going off what you mention it makes sense to buy better quality rather than cheap imports from our industrious friends in the far east
we don't have the leadscrews available for sale. the heated beds are coming and will be restocked in 4 - 5 weeks subject to no technical issues.
I could sure use a new set of true lead screws. From day one I've had a subtle imperfection that causes prints to have a noticeable thread-length banding. Its subtle but more visibly noticeable depending on the filament color/translucency. I'd love to get that little nuanced wobble eliminated-even though I've pleased as punch with the quality of my prints.

A pretty interesting thread but it raises a question. Given that in a post just above in this thread @Greg Holloway answers my question about the length of the leadscrews with the reply 347mm why are selections made for a length of 500mm when there are 350mm options available in the case of the eBay listing and an exact length option in the case of pic-designcatalog. It would seem that using 500mm would be at the least overkill and at the extreme too big to fit in the available space, the latter is an assumption as I have still not yet begun construction being still at the sourcing stage of my project.
Not quite sure I follow but any length longer than the required 347 is easy to trim to length. A dremel cutoff wheel can cut a rod to length. Then you can clean up the cut end with a file, grinder, or rotary stone on the dremel
Ok that simplifies things, I didn't realise cutting to length was as simple as that having never had reason to do it in the past. Thank you To simplify my previous post (sorry, I did make it a bit complicated ). In the thread you referred us to there were two direct sources given in one of the postings, a company called pic-designcatalog and an eBay seller in China. Pic-designcatalog have an option to cut to exact length reqd and the eBay seller had a choice of 350mm to pick from. The actual length required for the BB Z axis leadscrews is 347mm but in all the postings 500mm length was referred to rather than the nearer options, it made me wonder if I was doing something wrong, that was why i was questioning it, more my own errors rather than errors of the various posters.
@Keith - I bought the 350 from that ebay and I can say two things - the extra 3mm is fine. Don't go to the extremes of getting them cut to 347, it's unnecessary! Secondly - they are decent quality, they are not bent, the nuts thread nice and buttery smooth. Although you might want a US source as it's ebay UK.
@PsyVision Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go. I'm in the UK, Manchester to be more precise, strangely I found that ebay auction on the US eBay .com but it's also on co.uk so all is well.
