Just as i was about to finalize my BigBox by installing the bed, it turned out i'm missing the 3D printed smooth rod caps. Brilliant! On top of that, i managed to break one micro SD card (don't ask how) and one got fried by the Raspi3 (no idea how, but after one boot, no card reader detects it, although it sometimes gets recognized as a card after multiple inserts and removals, albeit briefly). *sigh* It's always the end of the build that ends up a mess. PS: Does the BigBox + OctoPi kit come with one microSD card or two (one with the documentation and benchy, one to flash OctoPi on)?
How much force do the rod caps get subjected to? Can i print them out of resin or would they crack? Form2 is the only functional printer i have handy at the moment. (my ord bot is semi-dismantled)
I don't think there's much stress on those parts at all. Resin should be fine. I used resin for a couple of lever-end knobs for my car, and have had no problems.
Should be no problem so long as the fit the onto the screws. Mine were missing too. They were part of the redesign of the z-motion system so it's easy to see how they didn't make it into a few Kickstarter kits.
there should be no stress on those parts at all, if you contact support they will send replacements. Btw that looks like more material for support than the actual parts
Small parts, so the total amount of resin used is fairly low anyway, and i didn't want to risk them deforming during peels. That's how SLA printing generally works best, though - oblique angles and lots of support. Support just rips off, though, so it's not a big deal. Anyway, done printing and rinsing, now drying / post-curing, fingers crossed they'll fit!
How tight a fit are the caps supposed to be? The ones i've just printed are somewhat loose. They fit nicely, but have a slight bit of wiggle room. edit: They measure 8.12mm internal dia.
They are supposed to be tight on the rods but loose in to where they have to fit in. At the top of the rods you tighten the two plates together which then will fix the caps but if the rods move in the caps this is contra productive...
That's how i understood their function too. Anyway, when i press on them from the top, they're not loose anymore, so i think it's a matter of the opening being slightly looser than the bottom of the "well" on the ones i've printed. I'll wrap some teflon tape around the rod tops, that should make them very tight.
The BB + Octo kit, in answer to your other question, comes with one SD card and one micro SD card. No need for us to ask how you broke it...I know exactly how..it's the same reason my printer has a dymo label on the bottom near some of the base screws saying "Remove Rpi Card First" I can't remember if the full SD card is a micro+converter though.
Interesting, i seem to have only received one card. Or the other one got lost somewhere, will have to recheck all the boxes. The label is an excellent idea, thanks for that, will make something similar.
