Brussels fablab has a couple of machines with a cutting area of: 1200 mm x 900 mm, 100 W en 180 W Does 6mm birch no problems and costs 40€/hour of cutting time. http://www.fablab-brussels.be/fablab/lasercutters/ You'd probably bring your material of choice pre-sawed to a manageable size so you could get it in the car. Come to think of it I think we had this conversation a few months ago (or was it with @fpex ?)... Just to give some idea of the market anyway!
Good news everybody...Got an appointment to go the the Brussels Fablab next wednesday. Frame will be cut on 6mm Birch Plywood...Exciting times ahead!!
Hey, Since the frame will be cut in 6mm birch plywood I had to alter the dxf files. So without further a due...Here they are. Have fun with them
As I told last week I went to the Brussels FabLab and got my first frame parts cut. First had to do a tutorial to learn how to work with the machine, but this was an experience by itself... After that I ruined one plywood plate, but that's the price to pay for learning Hopefully today I can go back and do the rest of the frame! p.s. It was nice to meet you R Design
Technically, @Tom De Bie, that was a case of two people meeting "through the internet". However a special case of "around the BigBox". Great fun anyway! I think everyone is going to be really interested to see your extended version...
Day two @ the Brussels FabLab... This is the machine I did my cutting on. It's slow as hell (2.5mm/sec), but the cuts are the finest... While cutting I was talking to the FabLab Manager and he slipped me an interesting book... Once at home I had to try the frame parts out. They fit perfectly!!

I know... The drive through Brussels made me crazy and this is a calm period being a holiday... Almost had two accidents in two days and I'm a calm driver...
If I could find partners and subsidies, I would try to make one outside of the big cities since it Belgium all is linked to a university making also the opening hours useless for people working.
There are a number of Makerspaces and Fablabs in Belgium. The ones that are linked to Universities benefit from extra equipment and knowledgeable people. For example there's one opening soon in Kortrijk where members will have access to a 4m waterjet cutter! @fpex if you come into the city by train (much better than car, let's be honest, because you can do something else) then Fablab Brussels is 2 metro stops from Gare de Midi.
The one in Brussels are timed for students, meaning that a maker that works is incapable to go there because it closes. The on,y alternative is a maker space, with makers and alike putting together a space with old machines available at decent times for working people. But those have other disadvantages (nit to me twin that are all also rather disperse). Kortijk is like the other side if Belgium for me. Even I am there often since my wife is from there, it is easier to get but rather far. Still interesting. But if university related, again only for students since in Belgium university and alike are like 9 to 4 (not even 5). When I was in US, other story ... Always open in Berkeley. A total mess, nor as clean as in Belgium ... But more useable b anybody and fun.
@fpex The Brussels fablab is accessible on Wednesday from 13h until 21h for outsiders. So this is a nice start
not really ... Better a maker space, it opens at 8pm Anyhow, I am going to get myself a Cnc one day and I am fine
I am curious how the Z axis consistency will be at this height. Will be interesting to do a full tower test print and see if there are any issues as the print gets taller..
