I have already purchased a Duet Wifi and the PT100 daughter board, I currently have a standard Kickstarter Dual 1.0, I also purchased the Titan Dual upgrade kit.

I am therefore currently printing out the parts for the Dual Hybrid Titan upgrade, but wondered, am I best keeping to the bed level sensor (IR I think?) that came with the BigBox or should I use a BL Touch that I also currently own but am not using?.

I have updated the Duet Wifi to RepRap 3.1.1, would anyone have any settings for this and for the BigBox before I try and start from scratch?.

I can not help you with any config examples at the moment as I started modifying my BB last year and realized I needed a printer no 2 to modify the first :D Then life got in the way.

But I can give you my opinion and experiences. The IR-sensor can be more precise than the BL-touch but is fiddly regarding bed surface. Having PEI or another transparent (semi) surface can be nothing but pain and using glue-stick can change reflections. I bought a BL for the BigBox but never got around mounting it.

This early spring I bought an Ender 5 Plus that comes with BL-touch. Even though it might not be as precise, bed leveling has never been easier. Of course I changed the controller to a Duet on this printer as well.

I know many have mounted the IR-probe on a fixed position off the bed to remove any changing optical factors.

So my suggestion is to either move the IR off the bed or switch to BL-touch. Remember it has 2 more wires.

But I can not stress this enough. Even to my self as it's so easy to rush ahead. The initial mechanical bed leveling should be thorough. Very thorough! I really do not want to say it's a design flaw but maybe someone forgot the KISS principle. You only need 3 points of adjustment for a plane. Never 4! On my Ender 5 Plus I spent a long time adjusting and re-adjusting. Maybe I went through 20 - 30 cycles. When you keep adjusting 4 points the whole bed will warp strangely until you get it perfect. But, when you get the perfect plane (between the corners, do not bother measuring anywhere else yet) other stuff gets a lot simpler, and mesh bed leveling can do the rest.

There is a lot of good help in the Duet-forums. They are quite active.

Thank you so much for the detailed response, maybe I will try moving the IR off the bed initially and if that doesn’t work I will try the BL Touch.

I also have an old Wanhao Duplicator 4X and have just pledged on the Creality Kickstarter for the CR 6 SE (although considering changing to the MAX to get the 400x400x400 build size). That uses a strain gauge with the hot end attached to it, so it is actually the exact height as it’s the hot end that is used to measure distance to the bed.

It doesn’t use an all metal hotend, so will be interested to see if anyone (E3D?) comes up with an adaptor for any of their products that will work with the strain gauge.
