Just had to show this off. Here's how wrong it can all go. Of course, this was an overnight print, and against all advice I left the printer to its own devices. I claim responsibility for leaving my printer unattended :)

The sequence of events ... it took about 30 minutes to go from 1 to 4. 30 worried minutes. But it's all back working again now. I'm really not looking forward to attempting to get the heater and thermistor out of there now though.

That's one way to prevent a thermal runaway ;).

It was a crazy crazy mess. I'm happy it's all still working well.

I know what you mean. Thinking a print will be done perfectly after a nice sleep only to find out you have a complete mess and wasted filament.

I can live with 75p of wasted filament. No biggy. The mess I could have done without. They can't release those silicone hot-end jackets quickly enough for me.

My last serious overnight fail on the big box, had scattered filament not only around the head, but on the floor, under the print bed, everywhere. I am still finding little strings of green PLA. A part lifted off slammed into the other part after being knocked by the head, which then cascaded into chaos...

[edited: link didn't come through first time - note why can't we embed vimeo links??]
