On the back panel, either side of the spine, there are two approx 2.5cm holes and two - even bigger - elliptical ones.

At the risk of making a fool of myself (again), what are they for?

I myself was thinking about this... Looks like mounting space for steppers...

Funny, I return this evening and nobody has participated in this?

Makes me think that we're the only ones who don't know!

I think Livi gave me an answer when I spotted it early on on her printer, I think it's to add the potential later on for more extruders by adding bowden ones (so as to not make the carriage even heavier). Maybe they have something planned....2x cyclops with one channel direct drive and one bowden ? so 4 different colours at the same time ?

or maybe it was a get out of jail option if the dual carriage turned out too heavy, convert the dual's to bowden extruders

    They are additional extruder mounts.

I am thinking of mounting speakers there and having it play soothing music to make the 3D gods be sleepy, and less angry, so that I will get less print fails... Maybe Kenny-G?
