I am actually working on using that same connector, except the plug is at the base and the steel guide is attached to the plug itself permanently so the whole thing pops off nicely. I also got some continuous flex cable from mcmaster which was surprisingly cheap https://www.mcmaster.com/8082k14

What pinout did you settle on for the connector?

I would love to see your design.

It does make sense to attach the steel guide to the plug, and I would like to see how you've designed it. The way I designed it maybe puts a little less stress on the plug, however now that I've worked with them for a while, those plugs are pretty robust and I don't see them having an issue. I have to unscrew the little grub screw but that is it in my design.

I too bought a McMaster flex cable, however I bought the one with a metal interior support mesh and it is a giant pain in the ass to get to the wires without damaging them and it weighs a ton so that wasn't a great decision on my part.

Not sure where pin 1 is so here is a picture of my pinout:
