http://raspi.tv/2016/new-8-megapixel-raspberry-pi-camera-2-1-launches New 8 megapixel raspberry pi camera released. Anyone going to give it a try?
I hope it has better dynamic range... It wasn't resolution (nice to have) but dynamic range and low light sensitivity
I suspect it is better in low light, but it cannot make miracle. Anyhow, if mine arrives this week, I will put it on instead of the stock one.
Source at Dpreview: "The new sensor is used for both the regular camera board and an infrared-sensitive version, and according to Raspberry Pi, it offers better low-light performance, image quality and color fidelity."
Mine is being delivered today. I have little time this WE or I would put it on to check low light benefits directly
hahah, the new camera is definitively better in low light. My lights need to be moved. But the video comes upside down :-( I need to check what is the issue. Of course, update raspbian after installation!
@fpex : There's a setting in Octoprint that manages the camera orientation. Settings / Webcam / .....
I know I know It is better but lights are still needed, so I am not sure it is worth the hassle honestly.
There is a widespread issue with bad lenses. Might want to hold off until it is all settled. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=146579 Also good to note it's reported the 8mp cam is better at shorter 20cm distance and not as good for things at a long distance. The first one's had infinity focus and the 8mp doesn't. But the fov looks much wider and having a sharper image in the short distances of printers, the 8mp maybe a positive. http://www.pi3dscan.com/index.php/blog2/43-comparing-the-old-and-new-raspberry-pi-camera
Lucky. Do you have image capture from both camera modules to compare the field of view when mounted on the bigbox?
Not really, I was only interested in low light performance. And to be honest for the BB, lighting will always be needed (at least for me as it is in the garage), so I might take it off and put back the original one. I might have some more fun things to build requiring higher res.
