I received my E3D socks for my Chimera hot end. Anyone know how to get these to fit? It says on the site that they will fit a chimera but they seem too tight and I do not want to force it. Is there a special trick to getting them on?
How don't they fit? Mine didn't grip the top of the heat block properly as my nozzles were screwed a bit high (protruding) from the heat block. Also make sure the nib of the nozzle is poking through the hole in the sock properly.
Sorry, I didn't mention how they didn't fit. The gap between the 2 hotends seems too tight to get both socks on. Once I put the left sock on the right wont fit. I tried taking both out of the heat sink and putting them on then sliding them together to get them on but it still is too tight in the small gap between the 2 blocks.
Any update on this? I was wondering if it was worth investing in the heater block upgrade so i can use the socks?
No update from me. Right now I have 1 sock on and the other "naked" it works well but haven't tried dual extrusion with it that way yet. Was hoping someone would answer here as it is a tight fit and I don't want to force it if it isn't meant to be. I was going to look into possible ways to do it myself but haven't gotten around to it yet. I will update if I find a good way.
Got the following reply from e3d Support: 'Thanks for your email and for your interest and enthusiasm in our Silicone socks. The Silicone socks are a tight fit on the Chimera but they are indeed supported. Many Thanks Dan' So i guess you just have to force them on?
interesting. i will have to try a few approaches one of these nights to see if i can get it to work. just worried about bending or breaking the geat breaks trying to squeeze them in
I got them to squeeze in together but then had trouble lining them up at the same height. The force from the socks made it hard to move one at all without the other moving. To get them on I used a small clamp to push them together with the socks on and pushed them into place
I just got mine, and I have to agree. It's way too tight. I LOVE the idea of the socks, though! I'd hate to not use them. Yea, I can squeeze them together and force them in place, but I can't imagine adjusting the height, and then sock deforms as well, making it not sit on the nozzle correctly. I'm thinking of cutting one of the sides off of one of the socks... so there will only be one layer of silicone between the two heads. I think that might work, but I'm afraid it might slide off the side that way.... sigh
A very late update from me, just in case anyone looks back to this. I finally updated my heater blocks and it is way too light to have two full socks on the blocks. I cut one side off one of them as Wyzird suggested above and it is still tight but manageable. I've printed for about 3 hours now and the socks have both stayed in position so don't worry about them falling off once one side is removed. Also if anyone reads this and wonders if it's worth it, it definitely is. I used to only be able to use my fans at 50% or the temperature would drop too low. But now i can use 100% and the temperature isn't effected at all!
The obvious answer pre-sock, would have been temperature transfer being greater than it would be in the other orientation. The socks look like they touch, so that may aid temperature transfer. The only real benefit I can see here though is that you have a more open path from the fan outlets to the nozzle tip. It does look very neat like this though.
I think some heat transfer will take place but how much and hopeful not an issue. I will have replaceable nozzle/block/heat break combos ready to swap for different nozzles. Will be using a 4 pin Microfit 3 for each block.
If anyone is looking back at this. It looks like the new Chimera+ places the heads an extra 2mm apart, so there should be plenty of room for the socks now
